HS Golf Honor Roll Teams/Individuals

2008 Hamilton HS Boy's Golf Team


Coached by Steve Kanner, the Huskies won their fourth straight state championship at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, Arizona.  The team had a 36-hole total of 575 and won by 20 shots over runner-up Tucson Salpointe.  Led by junior C.J. Kim, the individual medalist at 70-65 – 135, the team placed all five players in the top 15 individually.  Contributing to the win were senior Andrew Yun, junior Chun Ji Kim, sophomore Cameron Palmer and freshman Ken Iida.

2007 Hamilton HS Boy's Golf Team

Hamilton won its third consecutive state title at Aguila Golf Course, led by Coach Steve Kanner.  The Huskies shot 579 over two rounds to win by 13 shots over Brophy Prep.  Junior Andrew Yun finished in 2nd place individually, shooting 70-71 – 141 (-3).  Senior Chan Kim, who tied for 4th place, and junior Shane Yoon, solo 6th place, also finished in the top ten individually.  Sophomore twins C.J. and Chun Ji Kim both finished in the top 20, contributing to another outstanding team effort.

2006 Hamilton HS Boy's Golf Team

The Hamilton Huskies, coached by Steve Kanner, won their second team title by four shots over Tucson Saipointe with a 561 total at Maryvale Golf Course in Phoenix. Sophomore sensation Richard Lee won the individual title in a playoff with Cameron Edens of Mountain Pointe after posting rounds of 68-69 – 137 (-7). Fellow sophomore Andrew Yun finished one shot back, tied for 3rd place, and freshman C.J. and Chun Ji Kim and Zach Davis all contributed to the hard fought win.

2005 Hamilton HS Boy's Golf Team

The state championship tournament was played at Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa, and the Huskies, coached by Delvin Schutes, were victorious, with their 567 total winning the title by a single shot over Tucson Salpointe.  Senior Brad Nicholson fired rounds of 69-67 – 135 (-9) to win the individual title by one shot over.

HS Golf Honor Roll – Individuals

Players are listed alphabetically.  These individuals have made outstanding contributions to the success of their high school teams, and have won significant individual championships at either the high school, college, amateur or professional levels.

 

Chan Kim – Hamilton High School

Chan Kim played as a senior on the 2007 state title team at Hamilton, and finished fourth individually.  After graduation, he enrolled at Arizona State University, where in 2008-09 he had one of the best freshman seasons in the history of Sun Devil Men’s Golf, highlighted by a third place individual finish at the NCAA West Regional.  He has won the 2009 Pacific Coast Amateur and the 2008 Arizona Stroke Play Championship, and is currently ranked 62nd in the Golfweek Men’s Amateur world rankings.

 

Richard Lee – Hamilton High School

Richard Lee competed for the Huskies as a freshman and sophomore, winning the state individual title in 2006 in a playoff with Cameron Edens.  In the summer of 2006, he was the runner-up in the US Junior Amateur Championship.  His performance in the Junior Amateur provided him with an exemption into Sectional Qualifying, where he earned a spot in the 2007 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Richard decided to forgo his final two years of high school to pursue his dream of playing professional golf.  He is currently playing on the Canadian and Nationwide tours, and hopes to advance this fall through Qualifying School to the PGA Tour in 2010. 

 

Brad Nicholson – Hamilton High School

Brad Nicholson won the individual state title in 2005, and lead the Huskies to their first team title as a senior.  After competing at Brigham Young University for two years, he transferred to the University of Arizona in the fall of 2008 to complete his college playing career with the Wildcats Men’s Golf team.  His career highlights include qualifying for match play at the 2008 US Amateur Public Links Championship and winning the 2009 Chandler Amateur championship with a dramatic eagle 3 on the 18th hole of the Bear Course in a three way playoff with Ted Neville and Dalen Nickerson. 

 

Andrew Yun – Hamilton High School

Andrew Yun played on three teams that won state titles, and finished second individually in 2007.  In 2007 and 2009 he won the Arizona Stroke Play Championship, and he was chosen for the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup team based on his outstanding junior golf record.  His second place finish in the 2009 Porter Cup launched a great summer of outstanding performances in the Pacific Coast Amateur, Western Amateur and US Amateur.  Andrew is a freshman on the Stanford Men’s Golf team, and is currently 57th in the GolfWeek Men’s Amateur world rankings.
